This is a piece inspired by my recent ask for themes for artwork during th COVID19 pandemic. A collaborator, Gerhardus van Wilgen wrote text to accompany it.
Borders
I am a country
Soon I will have my own flag
My own system of
Education
My own hair color.
I am a country
My religions speaks
Only to me
I will have my
Own library.
I am a country
Fortified
Protected
Against the enemy
I am a country
Here I live
And here I
Will die.
I am a country
My
Media
Is I.
I am a country
The rule of
Law
That is me too.
I am a country
I am looking at
you.
Separated by a
Membrane of love,
You are a country
Too.
Ai!
Now we
have to negotiate
A treatment.
Do I enter you
Or do you enter me.
We are two countries
You know what Shakespeare said?
We are two countries
Separated by a
Voluntary wall.
We are two countries
If we both invade
We are still
Each others’ opposite.
We are two
Countries
We should hold our
Breath
And become as one.
We hold our flag
We color our hair
Share our library
And our religion
We will prevail
As long
As our air
Lasts…
